Guiding Tomorrow’s Physicians with Aloha

Cultivating Excellence and Shaping Futures

The Hawaii Preceptorship Program, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization started by Dr. Charlie Sonido, has helped train numerous medical students, international medical graduates, medical residents, and nurse practitioners, with the aim to produce conscientious, compassionate and highly competent providers

Curriculum

Hawaii Preceptorship Program’s Curriculum is aligned with the Six ACGME Core competencies

Medical Knowledge

Our program is designed to expand clinical knowledge and improve interpersonal skills within the American healthcare context. We provide a platform for gaining experience in outpatient primary care, with a focus on outcome-based management strategies. Our goal is to develop practitioners who are well-rounded, versatile, and culturally competent. They will possess comprehensive knowledge in conditions frequently encountered in primary care.

Patient Care and Procedural Skills

Participants in our program will have the opportunity to observe and learn from a variety of procedures in Ambulatory Surgery, Sports Medicine, and Women’s Health.

Practice-Based Learning and Improvement

We emphasize learning through didactics and intensive study of the latest scientific evidence, ensuring that our preceptees stay at the forefront of medical advancements.

Systems-Based Practice

Our preceptees will experience high-quality, cost-effective medical care across multiple clinics. This exposure allows them to understand healthcare delivery in the context of local healthcare systems and resources. They will also engage in quality improvement projects aimed at enhancing patient engagement, closing gaps in preventive care, and improving patient outcomes.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills

Our training includes diverse communication approaches, enabling preceptees to effectively collaborate within healthcare teams and establish therapeutic relationships with patients and their families.

Professionalism

Our preceptees interact with a diverse population, including individuals from various educational, economic, and cultural backgrounds. They are trained to treat every individual with the utmost dignity and respect.

“We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next, to find ourselves. We travel to open our hearts and eyes and learn more about the world than our newspapers will accommodate. We travel to bring what little we can, in our ignorance and knowledge, to those parts of the globe whose riches are differently dispersed.”
